Annual functions and activities of BMS in the UK

Shahid Dibosh (International Mother Language Day)

This day the society commemorates the language movement of Bangladesh. On 21st February 1952, several young students of Dhaka University laid down their lives to protest and establish ‘Bengali’ as the national language of the then Pakistan. This language movement finally led to the liberation movement and independence of Bangladesh in 1971. On this day the society lays flowers to the Shahid Minar and pays tributes to the language movement heroes (martyrs) with great honour, dignity and pride.

Recently the UNESCO has recognized the 21st February as the International Mother Language Day and this day is celebrated worldwide.

Bengali New Year Celebration

The society celebrates the Bengali New Year, which is called Pahela Boishak. This happens on a weekend in May after the 1st day of Bengali month Boishak. On this occasion the society celebrates and practices the culture and traditions of Bengali New Year, with a cultural programme including Bengali songs and drama usually reflecting all the six seasons of Bangladesh.

Annual Dinner

The society hosts the annual dinner of the BMS on the same evening of the Bengali New Year celebration in May. The society invites an honourable and distinguished person to be the guest of honour of the annual dinner.

Annual Reunion

This is an annual gathering of the society members, associate members and affiliate members and their families and friends.

Usually it takes place over a weekend in September in a hotel spreading over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The whole annual reunion programme usually takes place on Saturday and is divided into four different parts:

  1. Inauguration ceremony
  2. Scientific Medical seminar
  3. Cultural programme including Bengali drama
  4. Evening Dinner party

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The AGM is for the paid members of the society only. The President, General Secretary and the Treasurer of BMS put forward their annual reports before the general members. Each member of the society discusses all the three reports presented before them and exercises their right to correct, add or subtract the contents of the reports before they are accepted by the general members.

The AGM usually takes place in the morning of the day after the annual reunion (Sunday) on the same weekend.

After the AGM, the Election Commissioner declares the names of the elected members of the Executive Committee (EC) of BMS for the next three year term. Then the newly elected EC decides the names of the office bearers as per the constitution of the BMS.

On the second day after the lunch, the society organises a cultural function before the closing ceremony of the re-union.

Any other special programme or meeting as decided by the Executive Committee.
